    Be Aware ~ Act ~ Reflect™

    catching breath

Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do,
to keep in the same place.
If you want to get somewhere else,
you must run at least twice as fast as that!

    -Lewis Carroll’s Red Queen,
    Through the Looking Glass

It sort of sucks, parenting in the age of the perfect.

Even as we give our kids awards for just showing up, our expectations for ourselves are crazy, off-the-chart, stratospheric. We want to be good parents. Good friends. Good homeroom mothers, good coaches, good citizens.

We want our meals to be Martha-worthy, our homes to look like they just stepped out of a magazine, our kids to be well-behaved. We want to advance in our careers, to become entrepreneurs.

And then there are those of us who blog about it. Meaning we put another level of pressure and scrutiny on our lives- voluntarily!- and are expected to have a sense of humor about it all too.

It’s a lot to juggle, and as you might guess by the lack of posting here lately, I’m dropping balls. (In fact, this post is a dropped ball. I just opened an email reminding me of the due date… yesterday.) My husband clucks with disapproval every time he walks into the house. I have not showered today. A bracket has broken on my braces (AGAIN… I do it clenching my jaw in my sleep) and I keep forgetting to call and make an appointment to get it fixed.

I’m “on” all the time, I’m forever “doing,” but I’m not getting enough done.

    And I’m frantic about it.

Sound familiar? Please tell me this sounds familiar.

My advice to others, when they hit this wall, is to go hide in bed. Go to sleep and sleep for as long as you need to. It may seem like that’s the last thing you should do, but you can’t think straight when you’re frantic. Give yourself some time and space and quiet so your brain can calmly sort through all the information you’re been bombarding it with. The priorities will figure themselves out. The words will come.

How do we keep from getting to that point, though? Where we have to shut down to survive?

We need to give our brain that time and space and quiet on a regular basis.

Meditation, as an example. Yoga works for those motivated enough to get to a class every day.

    Here’s a DIY option: take a Cerra™ Moment.

Cerra™ products are designed to not only help you grab that white space in your day– the breathing room that gives everything else clarity– but they help you to live with intention, to use that white space as a framework for the rest of your day.

The Intentions are named: Grounded, Creative Energy, Gratitude, Loving Kindness, Courage, Wisdom, Inspiration; and the tools are provided to help you to “be aware of your thoughts and feelings, act with thoughtful intention, and reflect on your experiences.”

As a participant in the “Cerra Be Aware, Act, Reflect™” program with SheSpeaks, I was sent a package with tea (Grounded, Creative Energy & Gratitude varieties), Sensory Oils embodying the Intentions, Dissolving Notes and pen, a sample-sized lotion, Gratitude Keepsake Notes, a journal, and Cerra™ calling cards meant to be shared. (Among the many products available, they also have pebble candles which burn for only 30 minutes, the concept of which I really like.)

The idea is to ritually carve out time to sort out your intentions for your day, your life. To journal what you’re feeling, what you want to remember, what you wish to accomplish. (The act of putting intention to paper is so powerful.) To take note of, face, and accept what you need to release from your life and then watch it dissolve.

My husband dismisses this as so much mumbo-jumbo, but there is much to be said for physical manifestation and overt declaration of intent.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it!”

William Hutchinson Murray, The Scottish Himalayan Expedition

Again, clarity. And with clarity, courage.

And with Cerra™ practices, a wonderfully interactive website and an online community to provide inspiration and support.

Wonderful for frazzled housewives/ soccer moms/ perpetually plugged in social media folk, searching for relaxation and that elusive thing they call balance. Yes.

I can also see this being a real respite for someone who doesn’t know what direction they want to take in life. Someone with questions and challenges they are struggling with. And especially, teens who are struggling to become adults but have not had the freedom of total expression, who are still learning their own minds as they inflict it on their poor unsuspecting parents.

How do you carve out “me time,” that white space in your life?

How often do you stop to reflect on where you are, where you’ve been, where you’re going?

    SheSpeaksbutton
Disclosure: I received a blogger package of Cerra™ products through my participation in the “Cerra Be Aware, Act, Reflect™” program with SheSpeaks. No other compensation was received and as always, all meandering and past-deadline thoughts are entirely my own.

    Review & Giveaway: OrganicaPure

    organic lotion and shampoo

I think I’ve firmly established that I am super picky about how I spend my dollar these days, and this is a company that is doing everything right.

OrganicaPure’s line of luxurious beauty products— from lotions to scrubs to cleansers— are purposely kept as simple and pure as possible, centering on three ingredients known for their therapeutic qualities: cocoa, aloe vera and honey. Each product’s info page clearly lists the ingredient list front and center, for absolute transparency.

It’s kind of remarkable, that this is remarkable. You know? It’s so refreshing to immediately know what you’re getting, no sleuthing, no fine print. But really this is the way it should work.

In addition, the ingredients page notes that OrganicaPure sources their main ingredients from “ecological and socially responsible means. We go through a rigorous process of identifying producers and distributors who meet our criteria of our highest standards.

    How’s that for awesomesauce?

So now we know that this is an ethical company using fine, organic ingredients with known compound benefits.

The next question is, is it any good?

The answer is yay! Yes! I tried out the Cocoa & Honey Body Lotion and 100% Body Butter, and they were crazy emollient on my dry, cracked hands (I’ve been doing a fair amount of dog washing lately; don’t ask).

The cocoa body lotion is nice and creamy and just feels like a good lotion— no wax, no filler. Jeff used it on his gross plumber’s hands and gave it his stamp of approval. I’ve been using it regularly after washing dishes and whatnot, and it hasn’t caused my very very hive-prone palms to break out.

The scent is light and non-intrusive. I’m pretty neutral about the scent, to be honest. I don’t love it (I lean towards citrus-y scents) but I’m usually very sensitive about fragrance and it doesn’t bother me at all.

Cocoa is an anti-wrinkle agent: It contains powerful anti-oxidant properties that prevent damage to your skin’s elastin and collagen, restoring and maintaining your youthful glow. It also works to moisturize and nourish your skin. Honey is also a gentle, healthy, natural moisturizer. As a humectant, honey helps your skin retain moisture without an oily buildup. Cocoa and honey work together in this luxurious body lotion to gently replenish moisture.

For my money, though, the organic body butter is where it’s at. This stuff hardens in cooler temps, so I literally am just breaking off tiny shards— like fragments of white chocolate— and letting the heat of my hands melt it so it can be massaged in. I can’t think of a better way to explain the hydrating quality than to say it’s like butter, so there you have it. It’s buttery and luscious and you can feel and see the difference in your hands.

Our 100% Cocoa Butter is just that – with no added emollients, additives and fillers. Extracted from world-renowned Mayan cocoa beans, our butter truly represents Organica Pure’s philosophy to revert skincare to its purest form. For centuries, Mayans used pure cocoa butter to protect their skin. Today, use our fast-absorbing butter to reverse the roughest skin and chapped lips, improve the look of scars and lines, and to smooth stretch marks due to weight loss or pregnancy.

At the rate I’m using it (just a tiny shard nightly before bed), this stuff should last me forever and a day. So it’s good that I actually really like the scent, even though it’s stronger than that of the other lotion. It just smells like straight up chocolate and I could just eat it up.

    I smell delicious, people.

One lucky reader is gonna smell as delicious as I do! I get to give away an OrganicaPure prize including the two products I’ve featured, the Cocoa & Honey Body Lotion and 100% Body Butter, PLUS an Aloe Vera & Honey Shampoo, so your noggin can smell as nice as the rest of ya.

Our combination of aloe vera and honey will leave you with healthy, lustrous hair. Aloe vera, a natural treatment for dry skin, will soothe your scalp and help to alleviate dandruff. It also provides a gentle deep cleansing for your hair. Honey, a natural humectant, seals in moisture to heal and condition dry, damaged hair.

    Professional Car Washes Save Water

We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.

    -Thomas Fuller

When we first moved in to this house we heard peepers every night in our little vernal pool. (Spring peepers are tiny frogs with big voices; you can hear them singing here.)

The next spring I eagerly awaited the peepers, having learned what they were (city girl born and bred, I knew nothing of wildlife and its calls until I moved out here). And I heard them down at the creek at the end of our road, but I didn’t hear them in my yard. And I haven’t heard them since.

I’ve thought and thought about it, and my thoughts point to all the times we washed our car near that pond. All that runoff.

This specific experience was what prompted my firm decision to “go green,” and out of that this blog was born.

Now, I’ll start by saying that my instinct is to think that rain is enough to wash my car. I couldn’t care less about how my car looks. But my brother, a former mechanic, says that car washes are important to keep rust from happening and stuff like that— helping to preserve the resale value and whatnot. (Although I plan to hand my minivan off to my children as they start driving. This thing is probably never going to see a second owner.)

In most instances, the green way of doing things coincides with the DIY lifestyle, but car washing is one exception. Washing your car at home with a garden hose uses about 7 gallons of fresh water every minute, amounting to nearly 100 gallons of water in 15 minutes.

But car washes enrolled in the WaterSavers program (meaning they meet certain environmental standards) use 40 gallons of water per car, max, in conveyor and in-bay/rollover systems. Self-service washes in the program use 3 gallons of water or less per minute.

Given that there are over 110 million registered vehicles in this country, if everyone switched to professional car washes that’s a savings of a hella lotta water. AND, car washes in the WaterSavers program treat and recycle their water, keeping it from poisoning our waterways and spring peepers.

There are more than 800 WaterSavers car washes across the U.S. and Canada; check to see if there’s one near you.

Register before October 15th for your chance to win an iPad 2!
