  • Grasshopper??

A queer fellow and a jolly fellow is the grasshopper…

Braver, heartier, keener, care-free enjoyment of life
I have never seen or heard
in any creature great or small.

The life of this comic, the mountain’s merriest child,
seems to be made up of pure, condensed gaiety…

Nature in him seems to be snapping her fingers
in the face of all earthly dejection and melancholy
    with a boyish hip-hip-hurrah.

    -John Muir

    How’s that for a description?

My greatest hope is that someday, someone has reason to describe me in such a wonderful and funny and passionate way.

Honestly, I am not at all sure this is a grasshopper at all. It clearly has just molted- the close-ups I took are gross, you can actually see through parts of the exoskeleton, it’s like something straight out an alien movie.

So my quasi- educated guess is grasshopper nymph, but possibly a locust of some sort? It doesn’t really matter, I guess. I’m just very pleased to have found a reason to use the Muir grasshopper quote. It puts such a tap in my step today.

  • Weekend Reading

    I am super excited!

Not only did my TV boyfriend Dr. Gregory House return to prime-time this past week but apparently Heroes premieres on Monday! Yay for non-reality television! The Huffington Post published this article about the new season that I did not read because I don’t want to know anything ahead of time.

In other entertainment, Issabella Rosselini stars in Green Porno, a documentary about the amorous escapades of insects. You know how I love buggy macro, so I will have to check this out. Lucky for me, it is available for viewing online, as I don’t get fancy cable channels like Sundance… Also available on the website is a quiz to determine what kind of green porno star you are. I haven’t taken it yet, let me know your results if you do.

Yay: a recipe for 15- Minute Tomato Sauce! Because I have lots of home-grown tomatoes but not nearly as much time. (via Slashfood)

I stopped buying books a while ago- more a monetary things than a paper thing- but my library doesn’t have all the eco-books I want to read. EcoBrain conveniently offers a good variety of these titles in a downloadable format, and a weekly free download. This week you can read Mary Appelhof’s Worms Eat My Garbage, the “definitive guide to vermicomposting”, for free! (via Green Daily)

How sexy is this car? The Tesla Roadster, an all-electric vehicle for the rich and fabulous.

I’m not going to dwell on the ethics of marketing electric cars specifically to the wealthy, rather than building more cars that are priced for the average citizen. I suppose it’s a good argument that “crazy rich people pay top dollar for tiny, blazingly fast and impractical cars every day. So really…why not make them green too?”.

Martha Stewart now has a blog (of course, because there is NOTHING that Martha does not do) and has invited bloggers to comment and link, and she will feature some on The Martha Blog. Now, I can’t imagine anything more frightening than Martha Stewart reading my blog, but loads of others don’t seem to find the prospect so scary. Go ahead, I dare you, invite Martha to your blog…

Like many others, I have been slacking somewhat on the blogging, and like this woman, I am blaming the “Sarah Plain effect”. Politics are definitely at the forefront of my interest at the moment, as they should be, I think; but I will do my best to not allow the “political cacophony” drown out everything else I am passionate about.

And finally, today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Umm…Aaarrr. You scurvy knave, and whatnot. (Have a good weekend!)

  • More Thoughts about Apples

Going through my Google Reader and immediately came across this post on Rum-Raisin Apple Butter and Easy Apple Butter Toffee Cake.

Holy cow. I already had apples on the brain after my morning post, and now I’m downright hungry.

I had been laying off the apples while they were out of season, and those few early apples that we bought at the farmer’s market went primarily to the kids.

Suddenly it has hit home how long it’s been since I’ve had apples in any kind of quantity, and now I’m just planning to go on a mad apple binge. Ravenous for apple goodness.

(Quick funny: We were in the car driving to the beach and Jeff kept saying how ravishing he was. He meant ravenous, of course, possibly mind-melded with famished, but he gets grumpy when he’s hungry so I didn’t correct him. “I am ravishing. Completely ravishing.” Later he denied that he was hungry at all. He was merely pointing out how lucky I am to be married to such a stud.)

What’s your favorite way to take advantage of the fall apple harvest?
Please share… I’m all about the apple crisp but we love trying out new recipes!

P.S. I tried to just annex this to my last post but the “edit” function only brought up the photo, no text, and I was leery of messing with it. Anyone else experiencing Blogger troubles this week?
