  • The Wonder of the Everyday

    Eastern Tailed Blue

    Man is surprised to find that things near
    are not less beautiful and wondrous
    than things remote.
    The near explains the far.
    The drop is a small ocean.
    A man is related to all nature.

    -Ralph Waldo Emerson

    You know how, when you walk across the lawn, little white butterflies flutter all about?
    We find them unremarkable for their familiarity.
    But up close: detailed, colorful, precise.
    Beautiful.
    And with a little tail.

    About five months have passed since I resolved to live an examined life. To be mindful of each moment, to seek out the miracles in the everyday, to weigh my choices, to stop allowing life to be something that happens to me but rather live each day of my life.

    Bad things still happen with startling regularity. I still make poor choices sometimes. The difference?

    When these things happen, rather than dwelling on them and becoming morose, depressed, withdrawn; I go outside and unearth the jewels and treasures in my own yard. I revel in the miracle that is my children. I take comfort in the sense of community I have found here, when perfect strangers and old friends take the time to show encouragement for my silly pictures and emotional ramblings.

    I have begun to forge new connections in the real world, and for me, a lifelong “shy person”, this is a new and exciting adventure.

    I feel lucky. I feel rich. I feel alive.

  • Think Happy

    Such as are your habitual thoughts;
    such also will be the character of your mind;
    for the soul is dyed
    by the color of your thoughts.

    -Marcus Aurelius

    We become what we think about all day long.
    -Ralph Waldo Emerson

    Happiness is a habit-
    cultivate it.

    Little secret blue jewels that open only while the sun shines on them,
    hidden in the midst of the ivy…
    like finding August treasure meant only for me.

    Not that it feels like August.
    “How sweet and keen the air! Every breath a blessing.”
    It is beautiful, cool; it feels like back-to-school.

    I find myself anticipating the gold of autumn leaves;
    I am planning for Halloween costumes;
    I am ready to bake pumpkin pies and fill bushel baskets with Granny Smith apples.

    What are you thinking about, all day long?
    Do you believe that the nature of your thoughts can transform the day?

    HOW TO MAKE A SWING
    WITH NO ROPE
    OR BOARD OR NAILS

    First grow a mustache
    A hundred inches long,
    Then loop it over a hick’ry limb
    (Make sure the limb is strong).
    Now pull yourself up off the ground
    And wait until the spring-
    Then swing!

    -Shel Silverstein

    It’s nice to know that the swing the boys made is being put to good use!

    Posting a bit late today- got all tangled up in the greatness that is Shel Silverstein and A Light in the Attic. I kept stopping to read the kids all my old favorites.

    I think you should fully expect to see more of Shel in the days ahead…
