Begin doing what you want to do now.
We are not living in eternity.
We have only this moment,
sparkling like a star in our hand
and melting like a snowflake.

Go to answer a phone call and look what happens- it snows all over my laundry.
May I remind you that it was a humid 74 degrees on Saturday?
I’m sorry, isn’t there some sort of rule that it’s not allowed to snow until after Thanksgiving?
It went down into the twenties last night; we had to scramble to bring the worm farm in so the worms wouldn’t freeze (I hope they’re all right, poor things) and to unhook the hose so it wouldn’t freeze and crack like every other hose we’ve ever owned.
Our house is an ancient farmhouse (built somewhere around 1820) that had an addition- well, added- in the 1980s. The old part of the house is heated by oil, the new by electric.
We discovered last night that the programmable thermostat (which we bought last year) isn’t working, so we couldn’t turn on the heat in that part of the house. I swear on everything that is holy that I could see my breath this morning as I packed lunches. Fun! Very Little House on the Prairie.
Well, it seems that whether or not I’m ready for winter, winter is ready for me. Time to stock up on marshmallows and hot chocolate!
Molly says
Oh, I love this post… the kids looks so happy to see their first glimpse of snow! The wind chill was 13 degree this morning when Dunky and I went for our morning walk… yikes!
Stephanie says
Mmm hot chocolate! and WOO 74 DEGREES! That's the nice thing about going to California for Thanksgiving. It'll be nice and warm, as opposed to freezing cold Minnesota. I can't wait.
Okay, but snow on your laundry — that's a funny image.

Same here, it was downright tropical on Saturday, though rainy, and now in the 30s! That's New England for you. Love the poem, and your Little House On the Prairie attitude. That's what matters, that smiling attitude.
Robin says
Molly, every snowflake is a cause for celebration for these kids. They have an elaborate "snow dance" that involves wearing their clothes inside out and backwards, and some sort of choreographed jumping, stomping and chest-thumping (done with doors closed, so no video, sorry).
Stephanie, I'm jealous, wish I could spend Thanksgiving in CA!
No sooner than I'd brought the laundry in, it stopped snowing. Lesson learned. Today we've got some flurries going on, but the laundry is staying out- I'll just brush off the snow before bringing it in.
Joanne, I don't know how much longer I'll have a smiling attitude! It's only ten degrees warmer in my kitchen than it is outside- that is, NOT VERY WARM AT ALL. So very soon we will have to cave and buy a new thermostat. Until then- lots of baking and snuggling under blankets with coffee and a good book!
