My little dog,
a heartbeat at my feet.
-Edith Wharton
Using the Wharton quote while I can, because she’s not going to stay a little dog for long.
That’s a 25% increase in body weight in just two weeks!
Who wants to place bets on how heavy she’ll be weighing in, at 12 weeks old?
Other random things:
- She’s gone from needing to be walked every 90 minutes to every couple of hours, and she can make it from my bedtime at 12:30am to wakeup at 5:45am. That seems like it sucks but it’s SO MUCH BETTER than those first few days.
- I think she brought a couple of fleas with her. I went to Petco and most all of the flea baths said they were not appropriate for dogs under 6 months old (and carried a huge number of scary warnings). There was an herbal choice that was for pups over 12 weeks old. Do I wait a few weeks and hope for the best? Is just a mild bath and thorough fleacomb sufficient? I really really don’t want a flea infestation.
- I bought some toys and things from Petco’s eco line, all of which was on clearance. Which was good for me, but why? Is it being moved for a new eco line or was it not selling?
- I feel dumb buying toys for a dog, particularly stuffed animals.
- Saint Bernard-sized beds are really expensive. I paid less for my first mattress set.
- I want to find green pet supplies that aren’t necessarily Petco brand; small companies, local, etc. Know of any offhand?
How much longer until those puppy teeth come out? Those buggers are like tiny razors!!
We’re adjusting nicely, she’s a good dog, but I can’t wait until I feel comfortable leaving her alone for a few hours at a time. I’m going a bit stir crazy.
Good pup. Good Karma.

I love St. Bernards! My first dog was one named Charlie. He would play a sock game with my Dad, and then swallow the sock when he got too excited. Bet my mom loved that!
When my youngest goes to preschool in a year, I told my kids we would think about getting a dog, a big dog. I’m just not a small dog person. St. Bernard or a black and white Newf.

I’m not a small dog person either- I really want an Irish Wolfhound. Or two 🙂
It’s so funny, I thought owning a Saint Bernard was a fairly rare thing. But once I started talking to people about it, I’ve been finding fellow St B owners everywhere!

Check out Great Pyrenees. I have Great Pyrenees/Lab rescue and she is a sweetie. They are very good dogs and lots of them need rescued because there is a problem with farms getting them, not training them how they should and then being pissed when they don’t know how to guard the animals and such so they just dump them. (I wonder if that is what happen with mine)
They have no play or prey drive so they don’t chase things. They will run things off that don’t belong but that’s about it. They are big soft, lazy dogs. They do need lots of brushing and a big yard but so do all big dogs.
And I agree with you both, not much of a small dog person. I like a dog I can give bear hugs to and use as a pillow haha. GP’s are great for both as they spend most of the day laying around doing nothing and are fine with being your hairy pillow lol.

Don’t hate me, but I’m not a dog person. I can look at photos of them all day and think they are adorable, but IRL, I stay away. Your puppy has that face that I wanna hug though! For my sake, I can’t meet her. There will go my street cred!

For fleas try Ark Natural’s Neem Shampoo and Spray. Works better than the toxic stuff and smells good. Oh and it’s soothing to their skin. If you can’t use it on the dog yet you can spray it around it’s bed and such.
http://www.onlynaturalpet.com Has the Ark Natural’s and other great green pet products.
http://www.purrfectplay.com is great for toys. My dog loves her toys and blanket from there.

Thanks Lisa! I’ll check them out.
When my kids are all grown (not too far off, now) I’m turning this place into a giant foster home– fostering kids and fostering big dogs so they don’t have to stay at the Delaware Humane building in cages.

Get a bed for him from Orvis.com. We bought Dunkin’s from them and they have a 100% guarantee so we just got a new replacement bed for him for free because his old one had worn out. They are more expensive initially but if you get a lifetime out them it will end up being cheaper in the long run.
