Children, like animals, use all their senses to discover the world.
Then artists come along and discover it the same way all over again.

I’m not going to lie: I love subscriptions. Like a good eco-warrior, I did cancel my magazine subscriptions, opting instead to check my favorites out at the library, but I still miss the monthly anticipation of something coming for me in the mail.
As a result, along with building sets and classes/experiences, one of my favorite things to gift kids is something that comes in the mail with regularity. Subscriptions to Ranger Rick Jr. have been my go-to for years, but now that my nieces and nephews are all getting older I think I’ll be switching over to a Green Kid Crafts subscription.
Green Kid Crafts is a family owned business, founded by a mom who also happens to be an environmental scientist. Each one of their award-winning Discovery Boxes contains up to 8 STEAM science and craft kits made from eco-friendly materials, step-by-step instructions, extension activities, and free online extras. Projects are designed for ages 3-10.
With Green Kid Crafts, both parents and kids can enjoy sustainable arts, crafts, and STEM science activities that spark creativity, build confidence, and cultivate respect and love for the environment.
The April Nature Discovery Box includes a paper making kit, a sunprint kit, a paper maché globe kit, a leaf-printed clay amulet kit and more. If you sign up before April 17th, you’ll start your subscription with this box— (hopefully) just in time for Earth Day.
You can buy subscriptions on the boxes; the longer your subscription commitment the more savings you rack up. OR, you can purchase individual boxes. This one is the Nocturnal Animals Discovery Box and super cute; it’s $24.95.
(I’m a sucker for shadow puppets.)
Sign up by April 24, 2016 to lock in Earth Month savings on a longer term subscription and get a year of Discovery Boxes for only $15.00 a month:
Use offer code GET1FREE at checkout to get $20 off a 6-month subscription.
Use offer code GET3FREE at checkout to get $35 off a 12-month subscription.
Green Kid Crafts is pretty serious about putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to sustainability and being “green”:
- they offset 100% of the carbon dioxide their business generates and help fund the development of renewable energy projects across the US
- their boxes are 100% recycled and they use use recycled labels and envelopes
- materials are bundled into plant-based, compostable clear bags
- they ensure supplies can be composted, recycled and/or reused whenever possible
- at least 1% of sales is donated to environmental organizations through 1% for the Planet.
Cass tried out a Green Kid Crafts box a couple years ago and it kept her busy for a good long time. I think one of the best things about this box is that it includes a variety of activities, so you can dole them out one at a time to stretch out the fun over the month or really just dive in when the box arrives in the mail.
Sound good? Check ’em out.
