Tricky Little Things, Children

June 16, 2008 By Robin Strong Elton Leave a Comment

My son Maverick hates peas. I have served them boiled with salt, disguised with rich butter sauces, integrated into vegetable lasagnes, mixed with garlic white sauce and tossed with pasta, cooked into omelettes. No dice. He would painstakingly pick out each one and if he actually found one accidentally in his mouth, he would gag disgustingly and have to run dramatically for a trash can.

Yesterday I bought some peas in their natural state. I don’t think Maverick had every seen a pea in its pod before. He thought that was pretty cool. In any case, he was willing to try one.

The pea was deemed acceptable. I informed him that he could just bite off a hunk of the pod itself, it would not kill him. Amazingly, he complied.

“Tastes like spinach!” he said. Thumbs up.

Will wonders never cease.
