Sprigs Apparel: Yoga. Life. Organic. (Review)

    Sprigs skirted flare crochet pants

Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only.

Fashion is in the sky, in the street,

fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live,

    what is happening.

    -Coco Chanel

So, I’ve lost a few inches ’round the waist. Which is, generally speaking, a good thing. Except for the fact that last year, in a bout of fevered spring cleaning, I got rid of all those clothes I was hanging on to in case I ever lost that 20 pounds.

Of course, now I’ve lost about 25, and just about everything I own is about 2 sizes too big. I look like a kid dressing up in mom’s too-big clothes.

I don’t mind too much (obviously), and in a weird sort of cosmic way I think I needed to let go of those clothes to make room for changes in my life.

But the few clothes I do own that fit my current body? I wear all. the. time. So they need to be 1) comfy 2) versatile 3) hardy 4) awesome.

One of the items in very heavy rotation was sent to me from Sprigs, a truly awesome line of insanely comfortable yoga wear that claims to “free you from the tyranny of the ordinary.”

We believe at Sprigs that the environmental challenge is global. Our producer of our organic products in northern China abides by the highest eco standards, including organically and family farmer grown cotton, soy-based inks, and recycled paper and plastic in all its packaging.

Love that. Love the clothes even more. Check out these unique, edgy, pretty organic cotton & hemp pieces:

I pretty much need every one of those items.

The Sprigs organic skirted flare pants with crochet detailing is one of my new favorite things to wear. It’s versatile: the top can be folded way over to skirt length so I can wear it on my way to yoga without feeling like my ASSets are on display. Or a less aggressive fold turns them into a basic pair of black pants that’s both flattering and pretty. I wore them to a charity fashion show I volunteered for since they’d be quick to get in and out of between fittings (that’s why I have on so much makeup in that top photo, FYI) and as you can see, they looked plenty classy for some impromptu shots before the show.

Usually athletic/yoga pants are a pain for me because if they fit in the waist, they tend to be too short. These pants are a perfect fit for me as-is, but are easily trimmed if you needed them a bit shorter. And the waist is so comfortable— no elastic band, not at all grabby, stretchy but still structured enough that they’re not slipping by end of day (even if you’re in and out of them a dozen times, like I was).

While the size small pants were perfect for me, I feel like the tops don’t flatter me as much. I have to size down to fit my hummingbird chest so I’m not flashing anybody, and the tight fit, while comfortable, I don’t think is a great look on me. I still have a ways to go around my midsection and I have pretty broad shoulders. The medium probably would have been too big up top, though, so I’ll just layer a loose tee when I’m not in yoga class.

I do like them, though. The graphic on the back is just my style and the straps don’t cut in to my man shoulders at all which is nice. Maybe if I work on those abs a bit more they’ll fit me better 🙂

Ignore the weird sun glare and lack of focus… I think Maverick was trying to be artsy.

So, yeah, I’m currently that mom who lives in her yoga clothes right now.

I don’t mind… my yoga clothes are full of awesome.

In addition to yoga gear, Sprigs carries:

    • Banjees wrist wallets, which are like fashionable wristbands you can tote stuff around in (think keys, money and ID, iPod). They come in a bunch of styles, including organic cotton and recycled fabric.
    • Earbags bandless ear warmers. Perfect for running in cooler weather and wind.
    • Cute beanie hats, infinity scarves, cold weather hats and neck gators, gloves (texting, with pockets, or wrist warmer fingerless varieties) and really comfy looking soft visor hats.

A word to the wise: life’s too short to wear boring clothes, even to the gym or while sitting at home blogging. Just because I’m hangin’ in my comfy pants doesn’t mean I have to look frumpy! Just because I’m stylin’ doesn’t mean I’m not comfy!

Love Sprigs for the pretty details, for the fact that I can dress them up or safely sweat up a storm in them, for the crazy comfy fit and of course for the eco-sensibility. A little on the pricey side, but totally worth it for the earth-friendliness and cozy-meets-stylish versatility of the pieces.

Mega shoutout to Sprigs for sending some “refreshingly original” duds for me to try out and review. All opinions were formed in my own brain.

Fitness Fashion Friday: Clothes to Get Muddy In

    Reebok running skirt, tank

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
    They think I’m telling lies.
    I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
    The span of my hips,
    The stride of my step,
    The curl of my lips.

    -Maya Angelou

Just have to give a quick shoutout to the outfit I wore for Dirty Girl as it served me well: looked cute enough to flit around wearing in public before leaving for the run, didn’t get bogged down with water and mud, my bra straps and skirt underoos didn’t chafe, and everything was so light that I didn’t even notice I had failed to throw my stuff in my backpack until I was getting ready to board the plane.

Here it is pre-test run a few days before (photo above was post-run):

    Reebok running outfit

People say she looks like me… I don’t see it 🙂

The tank top, sports bra and running skirt are Reebok. (The sports bra I bought is the same pink as the skirt, and that combination seriously makes me look like a demented cheerleader.) They all came from Dick’s Sporting Goods, who inexplicably does not picture all the colors available on their website. Reebok’s running skirt, by the way, only set me back $25, half of the cost of its Nike equivalent.

The socks also came from Dick’s Sporting Goods— they are Thorlo Experia, have extra cushioning on the heel and are super thin around the midfoot. I am really weird about seams and it took me a long time to find a sock to run in that didn’t drive me crazy. These are perfect. They’re also $15 retail (I think I paid $13, Amazon has them as low as $10), but to me worth every penny to not want to fix my socks with every step.

The shoes were my Patagonia Fore Runners and they did great not picking up tons of water (they did pick up some but drained pretty well).

Another photo of the outfit dirtified. This one also taken by Victoria Runs, used in Madeline’s recap on Food, Fitness and Family (lots more photos on that post, go check it out).

I like how creepy my braces look. Also, those firemen? Not so thrilled to be standing so close to girls so dirty.

OK, I’m done yammering about Dirty Girl, I swear. Happy Friday!

  • Fashion Fitness Friday: Patagonia Shoes (Review and Giveaway)

    Patagonia Fore Runners

I still have my feet on the ground, I just wear better shoes.

    -Oprah Winfrey

Patagonia boxFrom their Black Friday ad that asked you not to buy this jacket, to their repair program, to their corporate responsibility and commitment to sustainability, to their policy of recycling clothing at the end of its life cycle, Patagonia is an epically eco company that’s getting it done.

And from now until April 23rd, they’re showing their eco ethics by donating $10 to Healthy Child Healthy World for every pair of Patagonia shoes sold through Online Shoes!

Awesomesauce, right? But what are the shoes like?

    Patagonia sneakers

I got to try out a pair to tell you about, and went with the Patagonia Fore Runner in Deep Plum/Flash Pink for running the trails at the state park that borders our property. The road that I take from my house to pick up the trails is pretty steep, and has lots of loose gravel and whatnot. I really wanted something with a bit of grip.

Bear with me here, I’m a novice runner and I don’t really know what an experienced runner looks for. These are just the details that jumped out at me.

I agonized for hours about what size to order; I can wear anything from a 10 to an 11 depending on the brand. Figuring I could always stretch a slightly-too-small shoe (as opposed to blistering in a too-big shoe), I went with 10s and they fit nice and snugly without caging my toes in. Yippee!

The Patagonia Fore Runner claims to be a minimalist trail runner and ideal for long distances. I’m still maxing out at about 3 miles, so I can’t vouch for that bit, but I did take these shoes out for a treadmill run and a trail jog.

My other pair of athletic sneaks are Asics, which I always thought were pretty light (compared to the Pumas and Converse I wore before them); the Fore Runners are notably lighter. The insole really cradles my high arch, which is pretty unusual for a sneaker (usually I have to buy some gel inserts).

    Patagonia Fore Runner
Why yes, I do have the knobbiest knees ever. Thanks for noticing!

I ran just under 3 miles on the treadmill (without stopping! OK, no I slowed to a walk once, but only for a minute and I made it up at the end! super slow, but I did not die! Thx Couch to 5K!) the first time I wore these out, in retrospect not the brightest idea in the world, but with no ill effects. No “breaking in” period: the Fore Runner is very flexible right out of the box, which made me wonder if they weren’t going to be the best trail shoes ever.

A cautious jog downhill to the park (and then a slow jog back up the hill), a distance of a little over a mile, made me pretty confident that I can run faster in these on our crumbling backroad and the trails without breaking my dang leg. They were plenty grippy and I didn’t go sliding at all. Which may or may not have happened before. Which may or may not have resulted in me almost falling in White Clay Creek.

So all in all, I like ’em a lot. They’re nice and light and comfy and sturdy, and they don’t look too much like “hiker” shoes— super cute for every day, even if they do nothing to minimize my giantess feet (Pumas have the market cornered on that quality).

Also, they match my hair, as a lovely older gentlemen pointed out to me at the Y.

    Patagonia Fore Runners

OK, you got me. You can’t really see my hair in that photo, but I’m using it as #PROOF that I ran. If you want to see my pink stripe in all its gaudy glory go here.

    Patagonia Fore Runner specs:

    • breathable airmesh and synthetic leather with perforated nylon overlay reinforcements
    • moisture-wicking, 100% polyester airmesh collar and tongue lining keep feet cool and dry
    • 15% recycled anatomical EVA footbed
    • gender-specific footframe provides a smooth forefoot stride, while a shock-absorption distribution plate protects against rocks
    • multi-density sticky rubber outsole provides 360-degree wet/dry traction
    • shoebox has pretty swirly design on the inside and invites you to turn it inside out and reuse for storage. SO BRILLIANT. How is it that I’ve never seen that before?
