  • No Child Left Hungry: The Great American Bake Sale

Tomorrow morn I’m off to the beach, at the crack of dawn. I’m exhausted and happy, I’ve baked my butt off all day. I’m out of eggs, I’m coated with flour, but I am filled with a sense of time well spent.

True, my banana bread muffins are a bit on the overdone side. And I should have stuck with Old Trusty, the America’s Test Kitchen Family Cookbook, when it came to the macaroons; Martha’s are a little chewy for my taste. But hopefully we’ll be able to sell them is spite of their faults, at our Great American Bake Sale.

I am not concerned about the sugar cookies. They are tasty- I checked.

So. What’s the Great American Bake Sale?

It’s a chance for me to make a contribution, however small it might be. I’m tired of hearing about how bad the economy is, and how much worse it’s going to get. I’m tired of feeling powerless. I want to do something.

Escalating food and gas prices mean more families with children depend upon local food banks. These food banks, however, are also feeling the pinch of higher food prices, and therefore have less food to give. I should think it’s just a matter of time before public schools also find themselves at a loss, and scale back on the nutritional quality of the lunches they offer.

Keep in mind that many children rely on the free or reduced-cost school lunch, to provide their most nutritious meal of the day.

The proceeds from the baked goods my family sells this weekend will be donated to Save our Strength, an organization that uses funds raised to support school and summer feeding programs, food banks, and nutrition education programs. In addition, by motivating people to get out there and get involved, they are raising awareness and enhancing a sense of community.

We’ll keep on baking tomorrow at the beach, and sell on Sunday. I’m keeping fingers crossed that we can raise some mad cash to fight childhood hunger!

Will you help us out? Do you have a dollar to spare for our cause? You can donate via the button on the sidebar at the right. Or donate directly to Save Our Strength- our team name is Beach Haven Bake Sale. Anyone who donates online and gives their email address will receive a virtual goody in their Inbox Tuesday morning as a thank you!

But even better would be if you were to register to host your own Great American Bake Sale!

It’s easy and a lot of fun…and we haven’t even done the selling bit yet!

Wish us luck! Have a good holiday weekend!

(I’d like to take a moment to say how much I love my KitchenAid mixer, without whom marathon baking days would not be possible.

And you know the baking is tasty when seven sticks of butter are involved.)

“If you give money, spend yourself with it…”
    -Henry David Thoreau

  • My Gift to You

It is possible to give away and become richer.
    Proverbs 11:24

You may have noticed on my sidebar, a little box that invites you to join me in the 29 Day Giving Challenge. This is a movement started by Cami Walker that challenges people to give away one thing for, you guessed it, 29 days.

Why? Because to see the world change, we have to do something to change the world. Plus, the best way to attract abundance into your life is to be in a perpetual state of giving and gratitude. Be an important part of the global giving movement that inspires more generosity on our planet.

The gift can be a tangible item, it can be monetary, or it can be a giving of yourself- your time, your energy, your knowledge, your kindness.

I came across Cami’s network via Unclutterer and it fit nicely with the philosophy I’ve adopted lately, about moving out the old bits of my life that don’t fit anymore, to make room for new, more positive energy. I know that seems New Age-y, but I can’t argue with success; I feel freer, happier.

What I love about this challenge is that it forces you, every day, to take time out and look for ways that you personally can help someone else. This shift in focus has a profound impact on how you approach the world.

Prayer does not change God, but it changes him who prays.
    -Soren Kierkegaard

Consider the ripple effect this has the potential for! Both the action of giving, and the reaching out to others to participate, to allow for that shift in thinking.

Please join me! You can click here to sign up or you can access my page and join that way.

It can be your gift to me, today.

I am looking at it as my gift to you. That’s how powerful it is.

Make a rule, and pray God to help you keep it, never, if possible, to lie down at night without being able to say, “I have made one human being, at least, a little wiser, a little happier, or a little better this day.”

    -Charles Kingsley

    Make this world better!
You have so much to give.
Think big! Think small! Start today!

    A little serendipity:
Molly just emailed me about this family, which is “chasing Utopia” by giving away all their possessions (Thanks Molly!).
