Saint Bernard Puppy Update: Karma, Week 10

    My little dog,

    a heartbeat at my feet.

    -Edith Wharton

    green dog

Using the Wharton quote while I can, because she’s not going to stay a little dog for long.

That’s a 25% increase in body weight in just two weeks!

Who wants to place bets on how heavy she’ll be weighing in, at 12 weeks old?

    Other random things:

    • She’s gone from needing to be walked every 90 minutes to every couple of hours, and she can make it from my bedtime at 12:30am to wakeup at 5:45am. That seems like it sucks but it’s SO MUCH BETTER than those first few days.
    • I think she brought a couple of fleas with her. I went to Petco and most all of the flea baths said they were not appropriate for dogs under 6 months old (and carried a huge number of scary warnings). There was an herbal choice that was for pups over 12 weeks old. Do I wait a few weeks and hope for the best? Is just a mild bath and thorough fleacomb sufficient? I really really don’t want a flea infestation.
    • I bought some toys and things from Petco’s eco line, all of which was on clearance. Which was good for me, but why? Is it being moved for a new eco line or was it not selling?
    • I feel dumb buying toys for a dog, particularly stuffed animals.
    • Saint Bernard-sized beds are really expensive. I paid less for my first mattress set.
    • I want to find green pet supplies that aren’t necessarily Petco brand; small companies, local, etc. Know of any offhand?

How much longer until those puppy teeth come out? Those buggers are like tiny razors!!

We’re adjusting nicely, she’s a good dog, but I can’t wait until I feel comfortable leaving her alone for a few hours at a time. I’m going a bit stir crazy.

    Good pup. Good Karma.

Giveaway: Stonyfield and Summer in a Box (CLOSED)

    Thanks to everyone that entered.

Man. Talk about the dog days of summer.

It’s HOT and the weathermen are bandying about names for the current extended heatwave, à la the Snowpocalyse (current contenders include “TempeRapture,” “Saunathon” and “Sweat Ceiling”).

Rather than dwell on the fact that it feels like I’m living inside a pizza oven, and that my pores are producing enough oil to fuel a small car, I’m hosting a little “beat the heat” giveaway thanks to the folks at Stonyfield!

Stonyfield has a new sweet treat: organic frozen yogurt bars. They’re the first dark chocolate dipped frozen yogurt bars on the market and made with certified organic ingredients, meaning they’re produced without toxic pesticides, growth hormones, antibiotics or anything else that’s harmful to you, your kids, or the environment.

Plus, each bar only has 170 calories, if you keep track of that sort of thing.

    GIVEAWAY:

My feeling is that when it’s so hot all you wanna do is hang in the hammock and sip lemonade all day, you deserve a few indulgences.

This Summer in a Box giveaway includes:

    • toms_maine_stoneyfieldTwo coupons for Stonyfield Frozen Yogurt Bars in two delicious flavors: Gotta Have Vanilla, and After Dark Chocolate.  These bars are made with organic milk and dipped in rich dark chocolate.  They contain four live and active cultures for healthy and tasty goodness.
    • Badger After-Sun Balm, a certified organic treat for sun-parched skin. It’s made with moisturizing plant butters and infused with Blue Tansy and Lavender to smooth skin and leave you feeling calm.
    • Dr. Hauschka Melissa Day Cream, a new 100% natural moisturizer that “calms, balances, and manages shine”: perfect for combination skin.  Formulated with extracts of melissa (lemon balm), it smells like fresh squeezed lemonade.  Extracts of anthyllis, carrot, witch hazel and English daisy soothe, soften and even so shine is controlled while skin is moisturized.
    • Coupon for Uncle Matt’s Organic Lemonade and Juices, perfect for hammock sipping. By buying Uncle Matt’s fresh fruit and juice you’re helping more than 20 small growers that make up their family of farms. That’s one of the reasons they’re proud to be family owned and organically grown.
    • Tom’s of Maine Triple Whammy:
    1. Simply White, the first and only clinically proven natural whitening toothpaste to earn an ADA seal.
    2. A Daily Moisture Body Bar; its ultra-rich formula that contains premium moisturizing olive oil and natural vitamin E.
    3. Beautiful Earth Deodorant is aluminum-free and PG-free. Odor fighting hops and odor trapping zinc salts work to inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria, and the natural fragrance helps mask BO.

I received a Summer in a Box myself to review (pictured below) and I’ll post my reviews tomorrow. For now, I’ll just say that the box smells freaking delicious.

  • If a Tree Falls in the Forest…

    fallen tree branch

Be as a bird perched on a frail branch
that she feels bending beneath her,

still she sings away all the same, knowing she has wings.

    Victor Hugo

We had a ginormous tree branch snap in half in the night.

I know that poor Jeff saw that mass of green outside our window and probably was depressed by the idea of getting that mess cleaned up. In the midst of a heat wave.

I saw that branch and was immeasurably happy. For three reasons:

    1. The angle of the snap meant that the branch missed breaking through the roof of Cassidy’s bedroom… by inches.
    2. It also missed the power line. That would have bit the big one.
    3. The branch did fall squarely on our birdhouse, but Jeff saw the house wrens fledging last weekend. So they should all be safe, thank goodness.

    lucky fallen branch

Things happen and we have no control over them… but we have every bit of power over how we perceive them. When I look back on my life, there is a very definite sense of before, and after, and that line is drawn by the moment that I really took that statement to heart.

If a tree falls in your front yard and no one is there to be unhappy about it… is it really such a big deal?

    pulling down the tree

    Well.

    Maybe.

If you’re the one trying to bring it down with a lasso.
